YOUR FIRST TIME: THE DO'S & DON'TS OF NUDISM

New to nudism? Start here.

So, you're thinking about trying nudism. Maybe you've been curious for years. Maybe someone invited you to a nudist resort. Maybe you've been researching it online and finally decided, I think I could actually do this.

Congratulations, you're a Newdist, and you probably have questions. The good news is that nudist etiquette is really pretty simple. Most of it comes down to something you already know how to do:

Respect other people.

Before your first experience, here are some basic Do's and Don'ts that can make things a lot easier.

DO: Bring a towel

This may be the most universal rule in social nudism.

Bring a towel and sit on it whenever you're using shared chairs, benches or other seating. Many experienced nudists bring more than one.

Think of your towel as part of your nudist wardrobe.

DON'T: Stare

You're going to see naked people.

That's kind of the point.

But there's a difference between naturally looking at someone while you're talking and staring at their body.

Make eye contact. Have a conversation. Treat people exactly as you would if everyone were clothed.

You'll probably be surprised how quickly nudity becomes unremarkable.

DO: Respect people's personal space

Nudity isn't an invitation.

The same boundaries that exist in the clothed world exist in the nudist world.

Don't touch someone without permission. Don't make inappropriate comments about someone's body. Don't assume nudity means someone is interested in you.

Nudism does not eliminate consent or personal boundaries.

DON'T: Take photos without permission

This one is important.

Never photograph or record another person without their clear permission.

Some nudist resorts and clubs have very strict rules regarding phones, cameras and photography. Some may restrict their use in particular areas altogether.

Always check the rules of the location you're visiting.

And don't assume someone is comfortable being in the background of your photo just because they're comfortable being nude.

DO: Learn the rules before you arrive

Not every nudist destination operates the same way.

Some are clothing optional. Others expect nudity in certain areas or circumstances. Some welcome families. Others are adults-only. Rules involving photography, pools, facilities, visitors and conduct can also differ.

Check the location's official rules before visiting.

Knowing what to expect removes a lot of first-time anxiety.

DON'T: Assume every nudist place is the same

A nudist club, clothing-optional resort, nude beach and private nudist gathering can have very different cultures.

Research where you're going.

Choose an environment that matches the experience you want.

Your first experience matters.

DO: Ask questions

You aren't expected to know everything.

Tell the staff you're visiting for the first time. Most legitimate nudist destinations are accustomed to welcoming newcomers and should be able to explain their rules and expectations.

And if you're confused about something?

Ask.

There's nothing embarrassing about being new.

That's why we call you a Newdist.

DON'T: Make someone's body a topic of conversation

Nudism exposes you to something we don't see nearly enough in advertising and social media:

Real human bodies.

Different sizes. Different ages. Scars. Stretch marks. Surgical scars. Body hair. Disabilities. Bellies. Wrinkles. Birthmarks. Nobody needs your approval or commentary. One of the most freeing parts of nudism is discovering that you don't have to have a "nudist body." If you have a body, you've already got one.

DO: Practice basic hygiene

Use your towel when sitting. Shower when required before entering pools or hot tubs. Clean up after yourself. Follow the same basic hygiene and courtesy standards you would expect anywhere else. Being nude doesn't change good manners.

DON'T: Treat nudism as a sexual experience

Social nudism and sexual activity are not the same thing. People are there to swim, talk, eat, play games, hike, relax, read, exercise, make friends or simply enjoy being outside without clothing. Sexually inappropriate behavior can make others uncomfortable and may get you removed from a venue. If you're entering a nudist environment, respect the purpose of that space.

DO: Expect to be nervous

You may be nervous walking through the gate. You may wonder where you're supposed to look. You may suddenly become incredibly aware that you're taking your clothes off around strangers. That's okay. A lot of nudists remember that first moment. Then something interesting often happens. You start talking. You get in the pool. You sit down with someone. You start enjoying yourself, and eventually you realize:

I haven't thought about being naked for the last hour.

That's when many Newdists begin to understand what nudists have been talking about.

DON'T: Pressure yourself

You don't have anything to prove. Your first nudist experience isn't a test. You don't need to demonstrate how comfortable you are. You don't have to pretend you're not nervous. And you certainly don't need to compare your experience with someone who's been a nudist for 30 years. Learn the expectations of the particular place you're visiting and then allow yourself to experience it at your own pace within those rules.

DO: Remember that everyone was new once

Every longtime nudist had a first time. Every single one. They had questions. They probably had insecurities. Some were nervous. Some almost didn't go, and some discovered a culture that eventually became an important part of their lives. You don't know yet whether nudism will be for you.

And that's perfectly fine.

THE SIMPLEST RULE OF ALL

If you're wondering whether something is appropriate, ask yourself:

Would I do this if everyone had clothes on?

If the answer is no, being naked probably doesn't change the answer. Bring your towel. Respect boundaries. Don't stare. Don't photograph people without permission. Follow the rules of the place you're visiting. Be kind, and enjoy the experience.

Located in a remote area bordering Santa Fe National Forest, Bare House Cottage and Tree House Coyote Cottage offers something that may be especially appealing to someone who has thought about nudism but isn't quite ready to walk into a large nudist resort for their first experience, and you don't have to take our word for the quality of the property.

There's hiking, incredible scenery, mountain and valley views, stargazing, a wood-fired sauna, outdoor shower and plenty of opportunity to simply slow down and reconnect.

The property is intentionally remote, the nearest grocery store or restaurant is approximately 40 miles away, so come prepared and enjoy getting away from it all.
The property hosts two units, so it is possible other clothing-optional guests may be staying on the property during your visit and some outdoor/deck space is shared. For a first-time Newdist, we actually think this will offer an interesting middle ground: more intimate than a large nudist resort. while still providing an opportunity to experience being around other naturists.
